So you have to work from home for the foreseeable future due to the Covid-19? Or maybe you’ve been working from home for a while now and are just looking to increase your work output?

Either way, this is an opportunity to work on your time management skills and overall productivity level. Here are the resources you need to improve productivity and continue to feel successful at your home office.

Just remember to get out of bed and put on pants first.

Communication is the most important thing:

According to FlexJobs, “when you’re not in the same office as your boss and teammates, you need to take your communication skills to the next level.”

Communication is the glue of any great organization, business or relationship. To be a successful remote worker, it’s important to communicate as much as possible with your colleagues so they know what you’re working on and are able to effectively collaborate on important projects. There are lots of great technologies out there to help support great communication in the workplace. One such example of this is Slack

Keep your core purpose in sight:

Deborah Galea states that “when working remotely, it is even more important to derive meaning from your job since you're missing the camaraderie and personal contact that can give you purpose,” in her article for Bonus.ly

Let’s face it, we’re physical creatures. We crave tangible connection to what matters to us. To feel accomplished and rewarded for the work we create, we need to feel acknowledged, have a strong sense of purpose in what we do and see results. This article from Home Business gives great tips on how to have a clear purpose when working from home. The key points include:

  • Write down your core purpose
  • Talk to people about the impact of your work
  • Have an abundance mindset

Develop solid time management and organizational skills:

Time management is a skill we’re constantly working to improve. It takes a combination of discipline and good habits to effectively manage your time. Working from home can often be distracting, especially when your bed might only be one room over, or your sweet fur baby is begging for  your attention. It’s important to learn ways to manage your time to stay on track and keep focussed. This article from Life Hack gives some great insight into how to improve our productivity:

  • Learn to say “no”
  • Delegate tasks when needed
  • Take regular breaks
  • Start early in the day
  • Avoid multitasking when possible
  • Set clear deadlines

Like anything else, working from home is a skill that can be developed. The stronger the skill, the more likely you are  to succeed in multiple work settings and, according to one study, be happier and more productive.
