As seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations are expected to provide resources, support and information to their members in a timely and effective manner, no matter what. Associations and other purpose-driven organizations were particularly dependable during this time, causing an increase in expectations for the foreseeable future.

Not every organization can be blessed with the seemingly unlimited resources and large staff sizes, but what they lack in size, they make up for with dedicated and innovative teams. In light of the recent increase in responsibility and expectation on organizations, how can a small staff succeed at performing on the same level as a large staff?

Focus on Quality and Not Quantity

It is easy to get overwhelmed at the sheer volume of content larger staff organizations can produce on a regular basis, but having consistent and accurate content on a slower schedule is just as powerful. If your members can rely on your organization to offer timely, innovative and actionable content, then having a slower rate of production will not negatively affect your organization’s reputation.

A smaller team can also allow for a more hands-on approach to member engagement. Personalization is key to member retention, and with a smaller team, your audience can really get to know the people running your organization. While your smaller team may have less time, the key is to ensure the time they do spend with members is memorable — and of high quality.

Readers can tell when content has been produced in a rush or without actual inspiration behind it. Focus on creating content that your staff can be interested in and proud of.

Increase Communication

One benefit to a smaller team is you know who and what everyone is responsible for, and are more likely to have the relationships necessary for collaboration.

Having a working relationship with everyone on your team can be extremely difficult as it grows. Smaller staff organizations have an advantage over larger ones, because they have more opportunity and time to create relationships with their colleagues.

The smooth running of group projects will translate into the success of your content.

Utilize Technology

With the right tools and guidelines, anything is possible. A small team can produce massive results using available programs, applications or work strategies readily available.

Time management tools like Asana offer small teams the ability to be constantly aware of what the organization is planning and who is responsible. This resource also allows team members to comment and tag each other when needing help or inspiration.

Another great tool for any team size is Slack. Slack allows people to communicate on a group or one-on-one level that many larger organizations struggle with.

Even though your organization may be on the smaller side, it isn’t something to worry about. Building a strong foundation of communication, teamwork and quality of work will allow organic growth and results over time.
