The increasing sophistication and accessibility of deepfake technology presents a significant challenge to organizations worldwide. This issue came back into sharp focus when Elon Musk shared a deepfake video of Vice President Kamala Harris on the social media platform, X (formerly Twitter) which Musk purchased in 2022. This incident ultimately highlighted the potential for deepfakes to spread misinformation rapidly.

As recently discussed in the Sidecar Sync podcast, for associations, whose credibility and member trust are paramount, the threat posed by deepfakes cannot be ignored.   4. Collaborate with tech companies and researchers: Partner with experts in the field to stay updated on the latest deepfake detection methods and potentially develop custom solutions for your association.
  5. Advocate for regulation: Leverage the weight of your association’s name and market share when engaging in policy discussions around deepfake technology, pushing for responsible use and clear legal frameworks.
  6. Utilize blockchain or other authentication technologies: Consider implementing blockchain-based solutions to create an immutable record of authentic content, making it easier to verify the legitimacy of association communications.

Like any technology, digital manipulation is a tool. It is one which can be used creatively and responsibly, but transparency and disclosure of its use is essential to responsible use. The last thing associations want to do is betray the trust of their members or compromise the integrity and reputation they have forged over years.
